The Lagos State Government has introduced a new transportation and safety strategy to reduce truck-related accidents and improve efficiency across the state’s maritime and logistics corridors.

The initiative was announced during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Ikeja, attended by truck operators, freight forwarders, terminal operators, security agencies, and other industry players.

As part of the reforms, the state government will provide free eye tests for truck drivers and work with financial institutions to offer loan facilities for the purchase of new CNG-powered trucks, encouraging operators to phase out unsafe and ageing vehicles.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the move is part of a broader effort to create a safer, more efficient logistics environment, noting that poorly maintained trucks, drug abuse among operators, and weak compliance with safety standards remain major challenges on Lagos roads.

He emphasized that upgrading the quality of trucks will reduce accidents, prevent cargo losses, and support the state’s long-term plan to become a globally competitive logistics hub.

The government also plans to intensify public sensitization on drug abuse among drivers and enforce stricter compliance with international safety standards.

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), represented by Abubakar Liman, backed the initiative, saying routine drug testing, awareness programmes, and health checks for truckers will improve road safety and reduce avoidable crashes.

He called on parents, community leaders, and religious institutions to support the fight against drug abuse, stressing that the issue requires collective action.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, added that the state is working with relevant agencies to create a structured health and wellness programme for truck drivers to ensure they remain fit for operations.

The Lagos State Government says it will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to build a safer, healthier, and more efficient logistics ecosystem.
